Alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, is the main omega-3 fatty acid in flax seed oil and can be converted into eicosapentaenoic acid, or EPA, in the body. EPA is in turn converted into prostaglandin 3 - a key anti-inflammatory substance involved in many pathways in the body, including maintenance of normal blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations, normal concentrations of blood triglycerides and healthy blood pressure.
