Ascorbic Acid (was Pure Ascorbic Acid)
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which cannot be manufactured by the human body. It is readily available from a good dietary intake of fruit and vegetables, but is easily destroyed by prolonged storage and cooking.
It is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger. It enhances white blood cell function and activity, and increases interferon levels, antibody responses, and secretion of thymic hormones. It is essential for the formation and maintenance of intercellular ground substance and collagen, for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, teeth and skin.
Vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron and the formation of red blood cells and converts folic acid to active folinic acid. It maintains healthy histamine release and supports lymphocyte formation. Vitamin C is also required for the synthesis of carnitine and steroids.
Additionally, vitamin C contributes to normal energy yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function. It also contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
