Horse Chestnut Balm
The active medicinal ingredient in horse chestnut is a triterpene glycoside known as aescin. Both the bark and the nut of horse chestnut trees are used to make an extract that has therapeutic properties.
Horse Chestnut Balm can be used topically on sores and rashes. (It is also used in some European sunscreens). However, it is primarily used as a topical anti-inflammatory agent. The most common modern use of horse chestnut is in the treatment of varicose veins and oedema, due to properties that can increase blood flow as well as make veins less fragile, by inhibiting an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
